I stand here in the midst of a grand party and I can’t help it. I feel alone as I look around at all the smiling, chattering people that I’ve invited into my home; movie stars, musicians, and people of note and standing. No one looks at me strangely for my wings or my deathly pale skin because I say all the right things, and smile at all the right moments and yet, I’m lonely.

I sigh deeply having relinquished Jess to some nubile young starlet, and I look for my family. Here Angelina comes all bright shining hair and toothpaste smile, Val right behind looking dapper in his satin lounging pants and smoking jacket. Anubis is chatting up Jesse James the motorcycle guy about god knows what, and Luc watches after Scarlet as she leaves the room. I make a mental note to ask him about that later, because to me it looks like someone has a crush. This hurts a bit making me sigh again a little sadly this time as I wend my way towards the drink table with its shimmering glasses of champagne beckoning.

I take the first one into my hand and drink it’s contents down in one long swallow, feeling it heating it’s way through my body with it’s alluring charade of borrowed happiness. Setting down the glass I think, *better but not nearly enough. * And take up another with single-minded purpose. This is a party after all and I have every right to be as happy and carefree as everyone else. And so it goes. One glass, two, then three, four, I’m on my fifth when I feel a pair of arms wrap around my waist from behind making me gasp.

“Drinking a bit much aren’t you fiend?” Anu’s voice is deep and gravelly traveling over my skin and making me shiver.
“So?” I ask a bit petulantly snuggling back into his arms as he takes the fifth drink and sets it on the table out of my reach.

“Soooo…little one, I’m just wondering why is all,” He turns me so I have to look up into his deep blue eyes knowing that I can’t keep it to myself when he looks at me like that.
“You’re sad again ain’t ya fiend?” He asks tilting my head up to look into my eyes.

“I can’t help it. I don’t know why Anu, I just……” I pause drawing in a shaky breath knowing that my eyes are brimming. “I just am.”
And it’s true. I stand here dressed to the nines, hair done, makeup perfect, in a designer gown that I could care less about and I’d give anything to be somewhere else, anywhere else and wrapped in his or Luc’s arms.

Anu quirks that half smile at me that let’s me know all to well he knows what I’m talking about. He presses a gentle kiss to my forehead and wraps me in his arms.
“I’ll make it go away luv. I’ll take care of ya, you know that right?” He asks sincerely.

I nod closing my eyes and breathing deep of his scent feeling calmer already. “I know Anubis, I know.”
We stand there just being for a minute or two, the music of the party washing over us and around us but we just stand there in our own private bubble world.

“Excuse me….” A polite voice cuts into our little fantasy world breaking the spell as I look around Anubis at a very handsome well-dressed William. “But I was wondering if I might perchance have this dance with m’lady.”
Surprised but thrilled I defer to Anubis who doesn’t look to happy about letting me dance with the handsome rogue but nods anyways giving me a wink and a smile and flashing his golden eyes at me just in case, as Will leads me to the dance floor.

As I settle into a smooth rhythm with my gifted dance partner, I have to smile and laugh at myself and my previous melancholy thoughts. This is what parties and friends are for, enjoying yourself, enjoying the night and forgetting yourself for just awhile in the arms of a beautiful stranger.

Course it could be the champagne talking too.
